Read a Book on your Phone

July 8th 2024

If you're like me, you've attempted to reduce your phone usage and doom scrolling by going cold turkey and deleting all scrollable apps from your phone. You still pull it out at any moment of boredom, just to discover there is nothing to do on it. At first you may resort to checking emails, the weather, anything that may offer distraction from standing in line or an elevator ride, but soon you run risk of reinstalling said apps.

My proposal: always have an ebook on hand and place the app you read it in front and center on your homescreen. I use Yomu or eboox. (Note that Yomu has a 10 book limit, unless you pay. If you reach that limit, I am proud of you.)

How you acquire the books to read is up to you, Project Gutenberg offers free ebooks and I have been told some may also be found in an Archive beloging to Anna. Googling this should reveal more information. When purchasing ebooks, make sure you aren't locked into reading them on specific apps or devices (like kindle). Or if you don't care, go ahead and lock yourself in.

Choose something that is easy to read and doesn't become confusing when read in 3 minute segments. Consider a collection of short stories, books with short chapters, or inspiring books that are written as aphorisms, like Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. Being organized into aphorisms makes it easy to read in short segments.

Reading Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism may help with your journey of returning to an offline world.
